I thank you for your interest in the project.

I am considering the requests that have come to outline future developments; I tell you now that my main intention is to evolve YALV introducing support for different "receivers" can read log files of various nature (XML, Log4Net, NLog, Text, etc.) and probably I will cover this in the near future.

Your proposal is interesting and I'll consider in the roadmap. For now I give the highest priority to the extension of support for log "receivers".

Hi YALV community,

as I wrote in an other post, I am very interested in using and integrating YALV in the applications I write. My colleagues and my chief are now convinced that such a tool is needed. Therefore the company is willing to assign a developer for contributing to YALV (We do not want to fork.).

The main contribution/objective is described here.

I would like to hear from the participants your opinion, either positive or negative.

yes I could play a bit and change which columns are displayed.
The implementation looks rather clean, so that is a good point :)

I will check the latest changes and give you a feedback.

Hi Francois,

where you able to get the WPF control to work or do you need a binary to get started?

About the column view feature: I am thinking about a context menu on the columns in the view with checkmarks to enable/disable each column displayed.
This setting is stored each time a log4net document is closed. So, the last column view is active whenever you re-open another log4net document.
Are already all columns visible that you need or are there any columns missing?

Would this functionality integrated into EDI work for you?

Hi Francois,

The control you are looking for is in the YalvLib sub-project.

I had no time to construct a setup, yet. But I figured this is for people who develop software so they know how to use it. Right now you have to download the source and compile it in Visual Studio 2010 Express/2012 Desktop Express or better. I'll write it on the projects home page so people know about that...

Your columns problem could be solved rather easily since columns are generated at run-time in the BuidColumns method:

This is where I would include a method to read the config from XML and then generate the columns accordingly. Or another way put, there could be a function that scans the first line and creates the columns as they are needed.

Let me know what you think maybe we can solve this problem rather easily.

After having played around with the XmlLayoutSchemaLog4j layout, I decided to write my own layout that will be YAVL compliant.
Basically I want to get rid of the unnecessary info because they make log files grow too fast and they are always the same (pollution).
So I push for that "column display visibility" feature :)

Hi,

really nice idea of combining file edition capability and log analysis capability.
It is somehow what I need but still missing something.

If I work collaboratively, I want to be able to share my log analysis session.
The session could be a simple zip file containing the log files opened + the analysis files + some settings.

Here is what I would like to do in YALV:
1) open the log files
2) analyse logs and write comments right into YAVL
3) use export function to zip the session
4) give the zip file to my buddy for cross checking the logs

When my colleague imports the zip file, he should see the same view than I did!

Please add ability to display custom properties.

For example here's my conversionpattern:
<ConversionPattern value="%d{yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss} %t %-5p %P{clientname} %P{parameters} %m" />

Would like to have ability to see "clientname" and "parameters" in the gridview.

For a quick workaround maybe add the functionality to display the original XML record when clicking on a row in the gridview. Currently when clicking on a row the message and throwable is displayed... Can you change the far left column to just display the full XML record instead of parsing out the same information which is already displayed in the gridview?

I'll add the link for sure with the next release - just have to re-style the about dialog a little bit.

...also have to find some other color styles since the green and red bares are really to much color if you work with ExpressionDark which I prefer these days :) Let me know if you like the control and maybe even take it back over into your project. I really refactored it only becaue it would not work inside AvalonDock 2.0 as it was... let me know if you have questions about it - its been my first time working with a DataGrid and I learned a few new things :)

It was good work from the beginning and I am glad it stayed that way :)

I refactored Yalv into a lookless WPF control such that it can now work in an MVVM application such as EDI which is based on AvalonDock 2.0. Please let me know what you think.

Hi,

YAVL! is a log viewer for log4net. Based on that developers will perform a log analysis. Usually taking notes on the side and later write an email.

What I am looking for is a log4net analysis companion. Basically I would like to be able to write comments for any log event right into YAVL! And then after, generate a report.

Are there any plans to go into that direction?

Hi,

first of all I would like to introduce myself as a new follower and maybe new user in the near feature. In my company we are using log4net and have been waiting a long time for a nice log viewer and YAVL! is a serious candidate. Keep going!

In my opinion the XmlLayoutSchemaLog4j layout prints out too much information. And I do not believe that many people needs to know about the machine name, the host name and the user name. For me it is just noise and forces me to scroll horizontally.

What about having the possibility of deleting columns on wish? And maybe by default, display only the most used columns by the community.

On YALV! 1.3.0.0 there's a core predisposition to use other provider types to retrieve log data (support Xml, SqlLite, MsSqlServer). There is only a base support, is yet to be completed.
